International SCRATCH Collaboration

Image
Through a request email enlisting educators interested in running the Boulder Computer Science Education Week 2017(CSEd Week) in their schools, I got involved in this amazing program that gave me a fun-filled and amazing experience. The CSEd Week program occurs annually worldwide, within the first weeks of December. It is aimed at introducing children to Computer Science, specifically, creating computer programs and robots among others, hence, appreciate the importance of Computer Science in their daily lives. The email was sent out by Lindsay Craig, a Technology Educator and Program Director, Boulder CSEd Week. Prior to the interaction, through a collaboration between the participating school in Uganda and Colorado, educators would introduce their students to Computer Science using Scratch. Scratch is a programming language, and an online community that allows children to imagine, program and share interactive stories, games and animations. I was interested in the progra...

Nyaka Inspirational Talk

Image
My first trip to the beautiful hills and low valleys of Kanungu, one of the districts in Western Uganda was fascinating! I love nature because of its magnificence. Although the journey from Gulu district in northern Uganda to Kanungu is 734 Kilometers  long, the few stop-overs were refreshing.  The trip was an extraordinary one, in honor of an invitation from the Nyaka Aids Foundation Project, to give an Inspirational Talk to the students in the secondary and Vocational school at Nyaka. With funding by Oysters and Pearls - Uganda, five other ingenious ladies and I, all in the technology field, set off for our exciting and engaging adventure to the hilly destination.   The sight of grazing cattle on the lush grass in the valley, enormous banana plantations, undulating roads, and the gorgeous people, constantly punctuated our hours-journey. The dusky clouds covered  the sun and we were blessed with hailstorm  rains. We arrived safely, recei...

Technovation

Technology events, challenges, hack-thons and startups are the thing today. A lot of groups, organizations and companies are organizing these. They boost young innovators, inventors and those with the passion for technology developments, designs and marketing. For example Outbox, Women passion program,  Garage48  among others. Those who have got a chance to attend some of these events will agree with me. The number of ladies that attend these events is always very small compared to the number of gents. This always leaves me wondering, is the communication only made to the gents or the ladies are excluded to be among the participants or the ladies are out of ideas? But then I happened to get some answers. The ladies are in most cases scared of being inferior to the gents per the ideas and the innovations. They are always quiet and reserved thinking their ideas are not great or thinking they  can't  do anything better than the guys. So the question remains ‘wh...
